Yarn Substitution Calculator - Full Guide

Convert any pattern to your yarn, estimate usage precisely, and check gauge compatibility.

1) How the calculator works

  • Converts the pattern yarn to meters per gram (m/g).
  • Computes total meters from the pattern usage.
  • Estimates how many grams of your yarn you need (+ extra %).
  • Hints if your gauge is close (stitches & rows per 10 cm / 4").
Tip: The final result shows grams of your yarn. We don’t force skein rounding.

2) Step-by-step

  1. Language & Units. Pick your UI language and measurement system.
  2. Pattern (original yarn). Enter label format:
    • Metric: m per 50/100 g
    • Imperial: yd per 1–2 oz
    • Nm: A/B (cone yarns)
  3. Pattern usage. Enter how much the pattern needs (g / m / oz / yd).
  4. Your yarn. Enter your label format (Metric / Imperial / Nm) and optional name.
  5. Extra %. Add swatch/waste (10% typical; 15–20% for garments).
  6. Gauge (optional). Fill author’s and your gauge to see compatibility hints.
  7. Calculate. You’ll see:
    • Pattern length in meters,
    • You will need of your yarn: grams (+extra%),
    • Your yarn equivalences: m/50 g, m/100 g, yd/oz.

3) Nm (cone yarns)

Nm A/B means meters per gram = B ÷ A. The tool converts Nm automatically.

Example
2/28 Nm → 28 ÷ 2 = 14 m/g → 1400 m / 100 g

4) Gauge compatibility

Enter both gauges and get a quick hint:

  • Close — good match.
  • Stitches differ — width may change; adjust needle/hook or size.
  • Rows differ — height may change; adjust length.

5) Copy, share & presets

  • Copy result — copies the output block.
  • Copy link — a deep link with your inputs (share or bookmark).
  • Saved presets — stored locally in your browser; click a row to apply, or Delete.

6) Pro tips

  • Always swatch and measure carefully over 10 cm / 4".
  • If yardage looks tight, buy one extra skein to match dye lots.
  • For multicolor projects, run separate calculations per color.

7) FAQ

Can I use it for crochet?

Yes. Enter your crochet gauge; stitches/rows hints still apply.

Why grams, not skeins?

We show grams for precision; skein rounding varies by brand/weight.

Examples

Here are two common use cases of the Yarn Substitution Calculator:

  1. Pattern yarn: 260 m / 100 g, 460 g needed
    Your yarn: 350 m / 100 g
    → Pattern requires 1196 m
→ You will need about 342 g of your yarn.
  2. Pattern yarn: 200 m / 50 g, 500 g needed
    Your yarn: 175 m / 50 g
    → Pattern requires 2000 m
→ You will need about 571 g of your yarn.

Troubleshooting

  • Result shows a dash (–): Check that you entered both meterage and weight for the yarn.
  • Gauge compatibility is not shown: Fill in both stitch and row counts for author’s gauge and your gauge.
  • Presets show blank yarn name: Make sure you typed a name into “Your yarn name” before saving.
  • Values reset after reload: Saved presets are stored locally in your browser — they don’t sync across devices.

Disclaimer

The tool estimates usage from label data and gauge inputs. Always swatch and allow for personal knitting/crochet style.
